Each year there are over 3 million referrals to child protective authorities. Despite often being the first to examine the victims, only about 10% of the referrals were from medical personnel. The fatality rate is substance abuse and domestic violence approximately two deaths per 100,000 children.
Supporting Someone Who Has Been Abused

Victims of domestic violence may file civil lawsuits for damages due to injuries sustained, including such claims as medical bills, psychological trauma, and pain and suffering. Domestic violence laws enable victims of domestic violence may seek a restraining order from the court to protect themselves from further abuse. While the exact process of obtaining a domestic violence restraining order varies slightly by jurisdiction, most involve obtaining an emergency protective order (“EPO”) from police who respond to the scene of a domestic violence incident. The EPO prohibits the perpetrator from approaching or contacting the victim for a specified period, giving the victim time to file for a domestic violence restraining order with the court. 51.7% of American Indian/Alaska Native women, 51.3% of multiracial women, and 41.2% of non-Hispanic Black women have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner during their lifetimes. It is important to be aware of federal and state statutes governing domestic and family abuse.
